The Vera Bradley Story
The Vera Bradley story began in 1982, when two neighbors from Fort Wayne, Indiana started the company when they realized that women had very little choice when it came to finding luggage that was both fahionable and functional. The two women, Patricia Miller and Barbara Baekgaard, each had an interest in fashion design and with the $500 they had in their bank accounts, they formed the company, Vera Bradley Designs, Inc.
The design firm was named after the mother of Barbara Baekgaard and initially they sold women's fashionable luggage items throughout the local area. Their initial products also included colorful hand-stitched purses, duffel bags and other types of accessories and luggage. Vera Bradley quickly gained a following and with this early success the founders were able to hire experienced seamstresses, negotiate deals on production equipment and materials, and finance a marketing plan. Ernst and Young honored Baekgaard and Miller with the entrepreneur of the year award in 1987.
The company still is located in Fort Wayne and is now headquartered in a large manufacturing center where they produce 800 products each day and employ nearly 100 people. Vera Bradley continues to innovate and surprise and this innovation has led to a strong following which, in recent years, has included many from the younger generation. The company is also very active in the community and has recently donated over one million dollars to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at Indiana University.
